Thinks
A diary of my life in Tokyo 2003-2006

Tokyo has entered the rainy season and we shan't see the blue sky for a few weeks. Although it's a bit of an inconvenience it's a good chance to use the nose. By this I mean the rain brings out fresh smells to devour. I'm a great lover of smells. I'm not a fan of bad smells just fresh and enlightening ones. So when it rains I have the best smell of them all : trees. It's an indescribable fragrance. Maybe a great poet could describe it convincingly but I am no poet, and I know it!
I went to Yoshinoya (Japanese fast food meat bowl restaurant) today as I often do and today like every other day I didn't order what I wanted. I wanted to get a bowl of rice with meat on top and extra strong sauce (tsudaku) and miso soup. But as usual I went for a bowl of rice with meat on top, salmon and miso soup. Ever since I came to Japan I order this because it's a set menu and easy to order - you just stroll in past the salarymen and school kids and say meat salmon set (Gyu sake teishoku). It's safe. The other one takes a bit of guts. I don't want to mistakenly order a raw egg with salmon tea! But it's become a habit to get things I don't want. I think I spend half my life doing things I'm under no obligation to do and have no desire to do. Anyway, I wanted to write this and I did so there you go - a habit broken!
