Kill Bill

Kill Bill

We just watched Kill Bill. I was expecting a more Tarantino experience, full of absurd conversations and postmodern soundbites, but all I got was a fairly straight forward Kung-fu revenge movie. That's not to say that there weren't Tarantino's trademark touches, but they just weren't as ubiquitous as in Pulp Fiction and True Romance. Tarantino said he tried to make the kind of film his characters in those two films would watch, rather than another film in their style. I think he's achieved this. I want to watch it again. I want to watch Vol. 2. Uma Thurman is fantastic all the way through. The music is cool. The fight scenes are awesome. The film looks beautiful too. But what's missing, was that feeling of excitement: it was all too straight forward, as if he was following a template of a movie, rather than creating one of his own. Regardless of this, it's still way better than Matrix reloaded, and still a great film!
