The Ambiguity of Generosity
In Japan, some public toilets don't provide toilet paper. Usually there is a vending machine at the entrance where, for a steap price of 100 Yen, you can buy a pack of tissues. Today I endulged myself and bought some. I don't want to be too detailed but I didn't use all the tissues so I put the remainder in my bag. On the way out I saw a man rummaging for change in his little purse. I looked at him for a while, thought of my tissue paper and then went up to him and gave him my tissues. He gasped, relunctantly took them and froze on the spot, laughing to himself. I don't know whether he used them or not- I'd rather not think. I can't work out whether it was inappropriate or not, to give him some toilet paper. Anyway, I think we could all sit a little more comfortably if...
